Awel Deg to become temporary office space

The former Awel Deg care home in Llandysul is being used temporarily as office space for Health and Social Care professionals while the business case to develop an Integrated Community Mental Health Resource Centre is being developed.

Health and Social Care teams for adult mental health and older adult metal health from Ceredigion County Council and Hywel Dda University Health Board are currently based in Awel Deg. The Community Team for Learning Disabilities has also recently moved into the building. Awel Deg is being used solely as office space, with no area to treat or consult patients at present.

Carys James, Ceredigion County Council’s Head of Adult Social Care and Commissioning said: “Developing Awel Deg into an Integrated Community Mental Health Resource Centre is very much in the early days and will depend on how the business case develops and progresses. The building is being used as office space in the meantime to host staff from Social Services and Hywel Dda University Health Board.”

Work on the business case for Awel Deg to be developed into an Integrated Community Mental Health Resource Centre in Llandysul has begun with the formation of a Business Planning Programme Group.

The group has representation from Hywel Dda University Health Board, including staff specialising in mental health and learning disabilities; Council representatives from Social Services; local GPs will be invited as well as the Community Health Council and Inspectorate representatives. Third sector representatives will also be invited to join as will service user and carers representatives.

Julie Denley, Hywel Dda University Health Board’s Interim Director of Mental Health & Learning Disabilities said: “There’s a real potential for cooperation between the Council and Hywel Dda University Health Board at Awel Deg, but how this proceeds needs to be carefully considered in the development of the business plan.”

The Group set terms of reference when they met in April and decided to hold two workstreams; a service modelling group, to identify the integrated service model for mental health services; and another stream to develop the work of developing the Integrated dementia care beds unit within Awel Deg.
